Birth of the Cool

The Tim Wade Nonet was formed in 2005 in order to perform the Birth of the Cool. We give a concert style performance of the album in the first half. In the second part of the concert we play unrecorded music by Gil Evans written at the time for the Miles Davis Nonet and pieces composed by members of the band, influenced by the album. Starring Dave Holdsworth on trumpet and Charlotte Glasson on alto (Divine Comedy, Oasis), Jim Philip baritone, Dominic Nunns french horn, Tim Wade trombone, David O'Flynn tuba, Tom Phelan piano, Sam Glasson drums and Nick McGuigan on bass. We perform at jazz clubs and festivals and are available for bookings.

Contact Tim for information and bookings on email boc@timwade.eu or call 07711963785. You can hear us using the QuickTime controller above or hear the tracks at our myspace site.

Birth of the Cool inspired a generation of Jazz musicians notably Gerry Mulligan and the West Coast movement, making Birth of the Cool one of the most influential Jazz albums. Despite its popularity Miles Davis showed no interest in reviving the work, it has rarely been played live and the music lay undiscovered in a warehouse in Philadelphia until 1995 when the score was published. Now, faithfully transcribed by Dave Holdsworth, the Tim Wade Nonet perform this classic music with extended improvised solos, as when first performed at the Royal Roost almost sixty years ago.

In 1948, Gil Evans arranged these tunes for the Miles Davis Nonet. Capitol records signed the group to cut six singles, which were eventually brought together into one album titled Birth of the Cool in 1957. The album has never been out of print since.
